It’s starting to get colder and darker. The need for layers and comfortable clothing is almost upon us. You know it’s time to change the wardrobe clothing when you realise you need your hoody because you cannot afford to put the central heating on yet. So you sort all your wardrobe out, but then the weather changes its mind yet again. So you’re stuck in between summer and autunmnal wear. However there is a manageable way how to change your seasonal wardrobe on a budget.

Top Layers

Cardigans or a light jacket are the most obvious one for the autumn and fall wear. Dependant on what you’re wearing underneath, so what sort of cardigan should you go for? There are some lovely cardigans out there at the moment, if you’re on a budget. If you’re short (like me) the best cardigans to wear with trousers or jeans are the shorter ones (ironically). However if you’re also carrying more weight (me again) then the best style of cardigans are the ones that sit just below your bottom.

If you love wearing dresses or skirts then the more flattering cardigan or jacket is the short one, just to the waist. Then just to throw in another option if you wear short dresses or leggings, long length cardigans are warm and flattering.

Don’t forget if you have the time, have a good look in charity shops. Even if you see something that isn’t a cardigan, if you’re handy with needle it’s amazing what you can come up with.

Under Layers

They’re not just for the grandparents, if you need extra warmth then get the scrappy tops and tee’s out because they can make great vests. The other alternative is that if you have a loose fitting sleeveless top or dress that you love wearing in the summer, wear it with a layer underneath. Match up a long sleeved top underneath. I’ve got various colours of long sleeve jersey tops. These come in handy for wearing under a number of clothes as the weather gets colder.

Legs

When I was younger, one of my favourite outfits this time of year was shorts with leggings. Maybe I was also wearing leg warmers but we don’t need to go into that. If you have shorts that you love wearing in the summer, get some tights or leggings. I would love to have the figure to wear these and match them up with black trainers. However, you can also team them up with a formal top and boots. In my student days I would wear my DM’s alot, they’re so comfortable and warm and are great with tights or leggings.

Scarves

I love my scarves, so much so that they always come out that little bit earlier and stay out a bit later. These are great because if they’re big enough they also act as a cardigan but can also second as a head warmer. I tend do do this because if I wear my hat I get ‘hat hair’ and being a curly girl makes it messy. You see, wrapping a scarf around my head doesn’t mess up the hair as much because it’s not as tight.

Comfort

It is ultimately important to wear what you’re comfortable in, but it’s not always practical for those of us that go out to work. Especially those in uniforms. The other thing to remember is that when you go from outside to inside still keep on the layers. If you get too hot coming in doors it’s best to keep hydrated rather than strip off. That way you’re discouraging those germs, and looking after your immune system.
