I know I can absolutely pass the time without spending money. The bad news? I realise that I will develop a strange relationship with daylight and start measuring my self-worth in how many tabs you opened on \u201cjobs that don&#8217;t require experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve looked at some deeply budget-friendly survival strategies with the appropriate level of sarcasm and emotional support denial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Library: Where You Go to \u201cBecome Smarter\u201d but Mostly Just Whisper and Panic Quietly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah yes, the library. Want to become a coder? There\u2019s a book for that. Want to understand economics? There\u2019s a book for that. Want to emotionally recover from unemployment? There is probably a fictional novel where someone else has it worse!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the best part? Nobody judges you. Well, they do, but silently, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/annabelwrites.com\/2021\/07\/25\/life-in-isolation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walking: The Ancient Art of Pretending You\u2019re \u201cClearing Your Head\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking is fantastic because it\u2019s free, mildly <a href=\"https:\/\/annabelwrites.com\/2023\/05\/05\/how-to-find-a-balanced-lifestyle-in-todays-busy-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthy<\/a>, and gives me something to do while my brain replays every job application you\u2019ve ever submitted and every email you regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tell myself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m going for a walk to get fresh air and think.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I am actually doing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rehearsing fake interview answers out loud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentally calculating how long you can survive on \u00a33.42<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Judging squirrels for having stable employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pretending that none of this is actually happening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, walking is excellent. It makes you look like a person with purpose, even if that purpose is \u201cavoiding existential dread indoors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freecoursesinengland.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Free Online Learning<\/a>: Because Nothing Says \u201cSelf-Improvement\u201d Like 47 Open Tabs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah yes, the digital university of \u201cI will definitely finish this course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are endless free platforms where you can learn skills like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graphic design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHow to be employable in 2026\u201d (still no answers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I always start enthusiastically. I take notes. Think of it as a slot machine where the prize is \u201ca chance to pay the mortgage or rent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cooking Experiments: The Art of Turning Basic Ingredients into \u201cWe Have <a href=\"https:\/\/annabelwrites.com\/2022\/09\/21\/four-recipes-for-fussy-eaters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food<\/a> at Home\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unemployment does wonders for your culinary creativity, mainly because you\u2019re trying to avoid buying anything new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could potentially lead to experiments like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cPasta but with three random sauces mixed together\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cRice again, but emotionally different\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cEggs, because eggs are always high in protein but don&#8217;t fill you up\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will become convinced that I&#8217;m \u201cgetting into cooking,\u201d when in reality I am just trying to avoid spending \u00a34 on a sandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, there is joy in it. But emotionally? It helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Becoming a Professional Overthinker (Free, No Qualifications Required)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unemployment gives you time. And time gives you thoughts. And thoughts give you\u2026 well, too many thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been analysing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every <a href=\"https:\/\/annabelwrites.com\/2023\/12\/30\/the-ugly-truth-ai-stole-my-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">career decision<\/a> I&#8217;ve ever made<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether my CV font choice is why I&#8217;m unemployed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If pigeons have jobs (they seem stable, honestly)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there was a job where I test out furniture (potentially beds!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is normal. Unfortunately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key is to occasionally interrupt this process with something productive, like making tea or staring at a wall in a structured way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts: I Am Not Lazy, I Am in \u201cLow-Budget Character Development\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unemployment can feel like you\u2019re stuck in pause mode while everyone else is on fast-forward. But in reality, you\u2019re just in a very unglamorous chapter of life where your main achievement is \u201ckept going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the truth is, there are plenty of things you can do without spending money:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learn something new<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move your body<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read things that make you sound intelligent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply for jobs that make you question reality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And occasionally convince yourself you are thriving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because one day, I hope that I won\u2019t be unemployed anymore. And will ook back and think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWow, I really did 14 \u2018productive\u2019 things a day while emotionally held together by coffee, sugar and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And honestly?
