In reality though your first attempt is more like: <em>thread tangles instantly, fabric eats itself, machine sounds like it\u2019s summoning something and you briefly consider becoming a person who just buys clothes forever.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it doesn\u2019t have to be like that. Sewing is one of those skills that feels intimidating until it suddenly isn\u2019t and then you\u2019re oddly proud of being someone who owns a pin cushion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s a practical, no-drama guide to getting started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Start simple: you are not auditioning for <em>Project Runway<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest beginner mistake is ambition. Start with straight lines (seriously)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sewing is mostly geometry pretending to be creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your first skill is controlling a straight line. That\u2019s it. If you can sew a straight seam, you can make:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pillowcases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic clothing repairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A very respectable sense of pride<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t rush curves, zips, darts or anything that sounds like it belongs in advanced calculus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Straight lines first. Expect mistakes (and make peace with the unpicker)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will mess up. Guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sew pieces together backwards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run out of thread mid-seam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accidentally sew a sleeve shut like a cryptic puzzle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realise too late that you cut the wrong side<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is normal. The unpicker exists because even experts make mistakes. It is not a failure tool\u2014it is a \u201ctry again\u201d tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of it less like undoing and more like editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Learn to press, not just sew<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest beginner revelations is this: ironing is not optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every seam you sew should be pressed flat.
